Norelco recently manufactured and installed two (2) new 550 Ton capacity open-drum machinery trolley hoists for BC Hydro's Peace Canyon Powerhouse Crane Upgrade Project at Hudson's Hope B.C. Canada. The existing cranes were upgraded from 325 Ton to 550 Ton capacity to accommodate single lift removal of the massive turbine shaft and rotor assemblies.

Each 550 Ton hoist drum is driven by an 8ft diameter double-herringbone drive gear powered by a 1200 RPM 100hp electric motor through a quadruple reduction heavy duty gear reducer. Precision alignment of the drive pinion to drive gear is critical especially when lifting such heavy loads.

These enormous trolley hoists weigh over 83 Tons each! Each hoist is double reeved with two (2) 1 7/8" diameter x 950ft long load ropes. Norelco was also responsible for the structural upgrade of the existing 83ft span bridge girders to accommodate the increased lifting capacity.

Norelco completed this multi-million dollar contract by performing both individual and tandem (synchronized) load tests of the two (2) upgraded Powerhouse Cranes. Each crane was tested to 125% of 550T = 1,375,000 lbs! The test load shown was comprised of a custom designed cradle filled with over 1400 lengths of 80lb ASCE x 33ft long rail sections.
